Massage Therapy Modalities

CNW students will be most proficient in basic Swedish Massage. They will also be introduced to various modalities such as those listed below. In order to master other modalities, CNW encourages graduates to enroll in continuing education classes.

Swedish Massage is the most often used modality by student therapists in our clinic. It incorporates long, flowing and relaxing strokes that soothe muscles and promote relaxation. Students are encouraged to incorporate other modalities into their basic Swedish massage as they learn them.

Shiatsu works with the meridians of the body, just as with acupuncture. This form of bodywork assists in clearing energy blocks and restoring balance in the body. The client is typically positioned on a floor mat while wearing loose fitting clothes. Shiatsu may also be done on a massage table incorporated with Swedish massage.

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a therapeutic treatment that works with the fascia layer. This modality utilizes gentle stretching and holds which help to decrease pain and restore range of motion.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is hands on, light touch approach that releases deep layers of tension in the body. This subtle yet very profound modality can relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.

Polarity Therapy incorporates holds on “Polarity Points” in the body. It was developed by an Osteopath and its purpose is to work with the energy fields of the body to restore balance and overall well-being.

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a soft tissue manipulation technique that balances the central nervous system. Student therapists work with the structure and form of the musculoskeletal system.
